Matt Dabbs started the topic "The Unseen Realm" By Michael Heiser in the forum Book Reviews 2 years, 1 month ago
I don’t usually start off book reviews like this but I want to encourage you to read Michael Heiser’s “The Unseen Realm.” My typical approach to a review is to tell you what I think about it and then leave you plenty of room to decide if it is something you should or shouldn’t read. If a book is honestly not worth the time to read it I will tell…[Read more]

Matt Dabbs started the topic "Jesus in Context" By Darrell Bock in the forum Book Reviews 2 years, 1 month ago
I recently came across the most helpful resources on the historical backgrounds to the Gospels that I have ever seen. It is called Jesus in Context: Background Readings for Gospel Study by Darrell Bock. This book works through the synoptics and John and pulls just about any relevant extra-biblical text in full quotation to help you see what other…[Read more]

Matt Dabbs started the topic "Jesus' Economy" By John Barry in the forum Book Reviews 2 years, 1 month ago
John Barry was a chief editor at Logos/Faithlife Bible software. He ended his stint with Faithlife in order to work with the poor all over the world and create sustainable business models to help get people out of poverty. He started a non-profit called Jesus’ Economy and has now combined his ministry with his writing in filling a gap with some p…[Read more]

Matt Dabbs started the topic "Megan's Secrets" By Mike Cope in the forum Book Reviews 2 years, 1 month ago
There is really no way to feel qualified to even begin. How do you accurately and fairly review something so special, so seminal and so central to someone’s life as a book about their disabled daughter? This is holy ground and it that to be respected.
My first exposure to Megan’s Secrets was Mike Cope’s series of lessons that he did at the Peppe…[Read more]

Matt Dabbs started the topic "Prayer: Experiencing Intimacy With God" by Tim Keller in the forum Book Reviews 2 years, 1 month ago
Tim Keller published another book on another much needed topic for Christians – prayer. His book Prayer: Experiencing Intimacy With God bears all the marks of typical Keller…thorough, Reformed and practical. I mean all three in the best possible way.
Thorough
Sometimes thorough can be a problem where someone spends way too much time on a par…[Read more] -

Matt Dabbs started the topic Having a Much Needed Conversation in the forum Race & Gender Issues 2 years, 3 months ago
I cannot think of more sensitive conversations than the ones we are having and need to have on race and gender in our churches. I hope and pray this forum is a place for those conversations. Let us speak with one another with both grace and truth. Let us try to learn from those we disagree with. Let us engage the scriptures together on how we can…[Read more]

Matt Dabbs started the topic "Renewed – Clothed with the Wealth of Jesus in a Tattered Land" By Bruce Morton in the forum Book Reviews 2 years, 3 months ago
I have really been enjoying teaching through Colossians the last few Sunday mornings in my adult Bible class. Paul’s letter is so relevant for us today in helping us understand how the things we believe as Christians are different from the belief systems of the world. There is an analogy Paul uses in Colossians 3 about putting off the old way a…[Read more]

Matt Dabbs started the topic "Paul: An Apostle's Journey" By Douglas Campbell in the forum Book Reviews 2 years, 3 months ago
A few weeks ago a friend recommended I read Douglas Campbell’s work on Paul. Since that time I have worked my way through his book “Paul – An Apostle’s Journey” and want to share some insights on the book, Campbell’s views, and the positives and negatives of the book as a whole.
The first thing to note is that the book is relatively short, 205…[Read more]

Matt Dabbs started the topic "Poured Out" By Leonard Allen in the forum Book Reviews 2 years, 3 months ago
If you grew up in Churches of Christ, this is the book on the Holy Spirit for you. In “Poured Out: The Spirit of God Empowering the Mission of God” Leonard Allen does what he does best – church history combined with biblical theology. When you add in his own personal story in Churches of Christ and his developing understanding of the Holy Spiri…[Read more]

Matt Dabbs replied to the topic What law (if any) is a Christian accountable to? in the forum Biblical Text Studies 4 years, 11 months ago
Great question Eddie. Law is used in various ways in scripture. Often it means the Law of Moses (Torah). James 1:25 talks about the law of liberty. Romans 6:14-15 talks about our freedom from the requirements of the Law of Moses as the regulating principle in our lives and instead we live under grace. And yet Paul was quick to point out in Romans…[Read more]

Matt Dabbs replied to the topic Where is God? in the forum General 5 years, 9 months ago
I remember Dr. Oster pointing out at Harding School of Theology that passages like Eph 1:3-14 are all about God and yet the translations make the headings about Christ. NIV = Praise for Spiritual Blessings in Christ. The whole section has God as the subject! This happens a lot.

It is these sorts of things that make these conversations fall apart. We start judging each other’s motives and intentions rather than working in the scriptures. What I am about to say is said in completely love and respect. You really don’t know me or how long I have studied these things. You don’t know my upbringing or background you don’t know…[Read more]

I am not leaving Aquila out. I said in Acts 18 explained is plural. Did you read my above explanation of the teachings going on in Rohesus by the young widows and what the word for authority means in 1 Tim 2?
