Thanks for pointing all of this out! We have a lot of hurt, brokenness, and misperceptions/misinformation around this topic and I look forward to gleaning more from your expertise in this area!

Great question Eddie. Law is used in various ways in scripture. Often it means the Law of Moses (Torah). James 1:25 talks about the law of liberty. Romans 6:14-15 talks about our freedom from the requirements of the Law of Moses as the regulating principle in our lives and instead we live under grace. And yet Paul was quick to point out in Romans 6:1 that living under grace does not mean we are free to live however we choose. Romans 6 reminds us that we died to the old way of life and have been raised to walk in a new, united with Christ, way of life that needs to be in line with the Spirit rather than with the flesh (Rom 8).

I remember Dr. Oster pointing out at Harding School of Theology that passages like Eph 1:3-14 are all about God and yet the translations make the headings about Christ. NIV = Praise for Spiritual Blessings in Christ. The whole section has God as the subject! This happens a lot.

That is a really good price for one of the best commentaries on Revelation. Someone will snatch that up.

I take this very seriously. The devil is alive and well. I do wonder if we don’t see as much of this in the states because Satan has done such a good job on us that he doesn’t even need to be so obvious.

Thank you for the recommendations George! At this point I am thinking a 100% full preterist position is nearly impossible to hold. Has every knee bowed and tongue confessed? Even among those furthest down the spectrum it seems they still conceded there are at least a handful of things that will be different in the future.

Acts 6 was probably before “deacons” in a more formal sense were around but it is the same idea…organizing people for service.

I thought I had this book but turns out it is “Pastor” by Willimon. I haven’t read either one. What else goes on your list of must read books on pastoral ministry?

Seems like we have gotten less formal and less structured. At the end of the day there are certain things that have to get done and it helps to have someone consistently paying attention to it (like helping the widows in Acts 6). It does seem like there has been a move to take these things and either just find a “champion” for it or a “ministry leader” and it often seems like changing the language is away around the qualifications given in 1 Tim 3. At least, let’s be up front about that if that is the case 🙂
